Pratt&Whitney picks Bulgaria for F-16 components factory

Pratt&Whitney, the U.S. turbine engines manufacturer, plans to relocate the production of F-16 engine components from Poland to Bulgaria.
The cash-intensive project was presented last week in Sofia to Bulgarian deputy defence minister Simeon Nikolov. The government official said Pratt&Whitney has chosen to start business in Bulgaria because the production facilities in Poland are overrun with orders.
The U.S. company invested $220 mln in Poland over the past 4 years, creating 6,700 jobs in the process. Nikolov said the parameters of the Bulgarian project are similar. The U.S. company plans to build an all-new manufacturing facility here, opening some 6,000 jobs in the next 2.5 years.
A team from Pratt&Whitney will visit Bulgaria in September to hunt for a suitable plant site..
Nikolov ruled out any connection between Pratt&Whitney's local business plans and the fighter jet order that Bulgaria is preparing to place. U.S. company Lockheed Martin is in the frame as a possible jet suppliers.
The fighter jet vendors, excluding Lockheed Martin, will stage a series of presentations later this month.
